Morehead Stepping Stone

I had this cute stepping stone made for Billy- He loves his Morehead and I thought it would be great to have something of it to decorate the garden! I think he really likes it. Now we just need to weed and mulch and it will look beautiful!!!

Rain

We still haven't got out into the garden to finish planting. The plants we bought at the farmer's market last week are sitting by the back door waiting for it to stop raining. I can't even be sad though because I really love the rain!

Spring Day

Today was such a wonderful weekend day. We got up went to the farmers market where we bought some purple tomatoes, yellow peppers, and strawberries to plant in the garden. Then we came home and I fell asleep on the couch watching TV. In the afternoon we leisurely went out for groceries. After bringing them home and putting them away we were off again to go to Hobby Lobby for yarn. We spent way too much money on more yarn for the stashes. And then to Greener Groundz for dinner. It was a really great day!!

Upside Down Patio Planter

I saw this at Sam's club the other day-- I love it. It is made from 100% recycled materials and, in my opinion, would look perfect on my back patio.

Upside Down Tomatoes

This is so cool!! I really want to grow some upside down tomatoes this year. I want to put some in the ground and some one the porch. I would just like to experiment with them. I wish I had known about this when I lived in the apartment!

Onions

We just got our onion sets out and now they are covered with snow! I hope they will be fine- they are cold weather plants. We planted white onions and purple ones. I'm excited about planting a new garden.

Composting

I know it will sound crazy but today I went out to stir the compost and found that some of it has actually changed into dirt.... I know that is what is suppose to happen but it was exciting none the less.

Theives

A couple of days ago I went out to the garden to pick a mush melon. Only two melons have grown on the vine this summer so I was really excited about eating it! So, anyway, I went out to pick our melon for us to eat with lunch. When I get out there the one that should have been ready to pick was gone.... There was no sign of it... not even a sign that it has ever been there. The smaller one had bites taken out of it... Both of our melons were unable to be eaten by us.

This is not the first time this has happened, however. Every piece of corn was eaten out of our garden. One day we went out and there was a line of corn pieces leading to the woods behind the house. Some had even been shucked and eaten like humans eat the corn.

This gardening thing has been really fun and I feel that we have learned a lot.... Next year we need a fence!!!!

Garden "Friends"

Today when we went out to pick from and tend to the garden we found that we have had a friend visit. Our squash and zucchini have been sat on.

Composting

This is a picture of our compost bin. Composting is not as difficult as I may have once thought. We have space for it and it's nice to put organic matter in a place where we know where it is-- not in the garbage being crated off to some unknown destiny. Composting is not as hard as I may have originally assumed. We just set up the bin and put our uneaten organic food matter in. Quick and easy. The only problem I have currently is that I'm not sure why we have a few flies swarming around it. It may be because we do not have enough matter to sufficiently stir it in currently. We may be missing brown matter. I will have to research and post my findings at a later date.

Our little plot of land

This year we started our very first "real" garden. We planted tons of vegetables and fruits. When looking at our garden, sometimes I feel that it is puny... Compared to some our garden is so small, but when we were tilling the ground I thought it was really something. A big piece of land for our garden. (Truthfully, it is only about 15' X 20'.) In the beginning we wanted be completely organic. This lasted shortly. We had to give up and put Sevin on the garden. Our vegetables were being eaten by tons of bugs. No matter how much we read on the net about how to take care of the problem organically it didn't seem to work. We put corn meal on the ground, used dish soapy water, picked the bugs off by hand, and more... nothing worked until the Sevin. Mostly, at this point, we are having success with our veggies. Our poor watermelons, though, have not survived... Nothing has seemed to work. We have put out four plants and everyone has died. I think we are giving up on them at this point.
